It’s weird to me that I feel like I can take on a whole new level of self-awareness in my studio, but I don’t feel that way about my office. I feel like I’ve been taking on a whole new level of self-awareness in my studio for years, but I feel like I don’t feel that level of self-awareness at all in my office.
When I was a kid, my office would have been my studio. When I moved to Los Angeles a few years ago, the studio was my new home. But as you get older, you often find yourself not feeling so satisfied when you’re home with your children. And in my case that feels so true for me.
It would be easy to say that you’re feeling detached from your surroundings. But self-awareness is more like a different state of mind. It’s not just about the quality of your surroundings. It’s about the quality of your actions. It’s about your thoughts. It’s about how you feel when other people are around. When you’re feeling self-aware, you’re always thinking about yourself.
I’m not saying that you shouldn’t be self-aware, but I think it’s important to have self-awareness in the first place. If you don’t, you wont have it when youre around other people. There are times when your actions become so self-aware you don’t even realize they are self-aware.
Like when you’re driving and you can’t remember where you parked your car. Or when you’re walking down the street and your brain is telling you to stop and look around, but your body just wants you to continue on in the same direction. How you feel about other people is very important for self-awareness. If we only knew what we felt about other people, we wouldn’t be able to figure out when it was time to stop.
If we only knew what we thought we saw in the sky, then we’d never be able to understand why we acted as if we were being self-aware. We could have been just as smart and rational as we are.
So how should you feel about your neighborhood, your friends, your family? When was the last time you felt like you had control of these things? In my experience, it’s been pretty much the exact opposite. I know I’m not the only one who feels that way. It’s probably true for a lot of us.
