Every Monday for thirty weeks I’ll send an email containing:
A challenge based on real world examples relevant to your current job role or industry
An exercise from our textbook with answers so you can learn while doing exercises (no need to buy the book!)
Theory questions related specifically to today’s topic so we cover all bases each week like homework does but way more fun! :)
Week 11 – Working With Events and Underlying Issues in BLUETOOTH
The challenge: Connect your phone to a computer and run the command “hcitool scan”. Write down at least five different types of devices you find.
Exercise – Scanning Bluetooth Devices with hcitool (answers included!)
This week’s theory questions are on event handling, which is an important topic in understanding how Bluetoth works! You’ll need a computer running Windows Vista SP x64 and Bluetooth software installed by default to use these lessons so please make sure your system is updated before proceeding (you are on your own if you need to update or install the bluetooth software).
Step One – Create a New Project File:
Open WidComm Bluetooth Software and click “File” then “New.” In this new project, we’ll only use one form so enter that in the first text box. You can leave everything else blank for now. Click OK when finished and it should open up with an empty form window. (Note: The other settings will be explained later)
Get Your Hands Dirty Tip 32- When using forms, limit them to as few items as possible! For example, instead of adding fields like “First Name” and “Last Name,” just add a field called Contact Info where users can enter their first and last name.
Step Two- Configure the Form:
Next, we’ll configure our form settings so it can store contact information for users. In WidComm Bluetooth Software, click “File” then “Configure Project,” or just use your keyboard shortcut which is Ctrl+C on a PC or Cmd+C on Macs to open up project configuration window as shown below.
After selecting the Contact Info field from within the Forms tab (which should be highlighted), there are two tabs at the top – General Settings and Input Types. Make sure that under General Settings you select Save Data in DB instead of Memory Only because this will allow us to save all data changes made via Widcomm Bluetooth software.
Next, in the Input Types tab make sure that you have Enabled as well as set it to ReadOnly. This will allow users of Widcomm Bluetooth software to fill out our contact form but not save any changes they make while doing so.
Within this field, there are also two tabs at top – General Settings and UI Styles. In the General Settings tab under Formatting Options let’s select Date/Time Only because we don’t want people filling out an entire date if they enter their birthday for example; just the day (unless someone wants a full calendar). Under UI Styles choose Screen Label Font Size 18 pt from within Graphics Tab which is located on bottom left-hand side of screen when open window appears. Do not forget to change it back to Font Size 12 pt, which is the default size for labels.
Next go down to Colors Tab and set all colors in General Options section to Screen Black Color (default) because we want our contact form background color will match what people see on their screens when they open up Widcomm Bluetooth software.
In this particular tab there are also other fields that you might be interested in further exploration with but these four would be a good start for now. Click OK button at top right-hand side of screen once changes have been made. Now your Contact Form should look just like ours! Move on over to Settings Tab next and make sure Enable Antispam Protection is checked off if desired. If not then please uncheck this field.
