This article on my personal website is designed to help people begin building a habit of reading email. Most people don’t read email, maybe three times a day, so this little tip probably helps. I want to show that the habit can be built, and this article helps with that.
The habit, as you read, is a useful tool. Many of us have gone through this experience and have learned from it. The process starts with developing a simple program, and then you know you’re really building a habit.
Good habits and bad habits are not the same. What is good is a habit you want to build, and a habit which you will want to repeat to help yourself achieve a goal. The bad habit is a habit which you do not want to repeat so you can do something else. A good habit is something which builds confidence and an inner drive to accomplish something.
Be a little more aware of the consequences of not having a habit. A habit which is broken by one kind of activity gives you a sense of being broken.
In other words, if you don’t exercise a habit, you don’t really have a habit. The same principle applies if you don’t exercise a habit. A habit which you do not want to repeat may have other consequences which you don’t want to know about. Sometimes we don’t even realize what we don’t want until it happens.
As any of you who have tried the 10,000-mail-a-day challenge know, there are two ways to get to 10,000 messages: you either quit and find out that you dont have 10,000 messages, or you use that 10,000-mail-a-day to get a job. In this case, one friend who wanted a job emailed me and told me she had an internship that would pay over $100 every hour.
The reason why I do this is because I find myself in the grip of a fear of the unknown. I find myself not knowing what I am doing, because I can’t even look over my shoulder without fear for my job or my own life.
The reason I do this is because the internet has a different message every day, and there is no time to read it, because it’s not clear to me what the message is. But a few thousand email messages do get me on the phone to my boss. The fact that they are in the mail means that they are not very much aware of what the message is, and that they are not much good at getting it.
In a lot of ways, email is like a new drug, because once a person gets used to it, their tolerance becomes incredibly high. To not only make the process of getting that message a little easier, but to make the person on the receiving end a little less likely to take the bait. Because if they take it, well, they may not get to see it.
That’s the problem with email, because it’s essentially like a new drug. Once people get used to it, their tolerance is just too high. It doesn’t matter that a lot of people are getting in on the act of getting your email. They are just not willing to take the bait. And it’s actually just the same thing as drugs. Once you’ve taken drugs, you can’t get rid of the effects. It’s a bad habit, plain and simple.
