This is a topic that I find myself grappling with as I am entering into the new year. We are creating a company and I want to be a part of it, but I fear I will be working for it, not leading it. I wonder if this is a good thing or a bad thing.
Many years ago I had a conversation with a friend about a company versus an organization. She told me that she could spend her days working for the company and her nights in the organization, and that if she worked for the company her days would be filled with meetings and reports and all the usual stuff we do when we work for a company. However, if she worked for the organization her days would be filled with organizing and planning and all the other usual stuff we do when we work for an organization.
For some reason I always wanted to tell someone that working for a company or organization was great, but that the world was full of organizations and companies and we had to choose if we wanted to work for one or the other. I never did. Why? Because I was so busy, and because I’m basically a complete person. I’m also quite good at making excuses for why a company or organization isn’t a good fit for my life.
This is one of the most important parts of life, and that is to make sure that we dont have to wait long for the right person(s) to be hired. Having a boss who makes a nice decision on your behalf, or a boss who won’t take your company seriously (or just won’t make a big deal about it) is a big part of being successful with a company that is. Because you are not the only one who makes decisions.
This is something that Ive seen happen a lot in companies. An organization will either choose to hire someone without even knowing exactly what they will do or will hire someone who has no clue what they are doing. They will hire someone who is known to be incompetent and thus can be replaced or they will hire someone who is known to be reliable, but they dont have any idea what they are doing. This is true with anything, but especially in the tech industry.
As the CEO of a small company, I can tell you that I have seen it happen. I am also the CEO of a large company. I was the one who gave my best and brightest to a company that was already experiencing a problem that they knew they were not equipped to deal with. Yet, my company decided that the other way was the right way and thus hired someone who had no clue what they were doing.
The reality is you cannot hire someone that has no clue what he is doing. Most people think they are a good employee of the company, yet when they are given a job they don’t know what it is. If they do know, they are usually wrong and do not have a clue. If they don’t know what they are doing, they are not good employees of the company.
The reason why company bosses can get away with so much is that if they do something that is wrong, they are generally right. For example, if they are one of the smartest people in the company, they tend to be able to get away with it. But, if they do something that is not right, they are generally not being right.
This is a common problem in companies where there are lots of people who are not in one of the two camps. The CEO of a large company is usually not in one of the two camps. A CEO is more often a person who does not care about the employees he or she has in the company. Or, a CEO is one who is in control, and is more interested in being in control than in caring about the employees.
So companies are often run by people who are not in the right camp, and are in fact very, very bad at it. Some companies (like Coca Cola) are run by people who are in the wrong camp. Many companies, like McDonalds, have multiple people in the wrong camp.
